Introducing Dr. Melinda A. Shoemaker, a Professor of Education at Broward College, and along with her duties as Professor of Psychology, Melinda has participated in the adjunct orientation for the college, serves as mentor for the behavioral science students, and she serves on several community committees. She is certified to teach Sociology, Education, and Psychology, and she is a member of the Florida Association of Community Schools. Melinda is an alumna of Broward Community College and Nova Southeastern University.
Melinda A. Shoemaker held the title of Director of Counseling and the Director of Career Placement until the career component was developed Into a full-time position, separate from the Director of Counseling. Dr. Shoemaker developed the job description for both positions and assisted in the search for an appropriate Director of Career Placement. She brings with her a diversified career in Psychological counseling and curriculum development and implementation in the behavioral sciences. Having earned her Bachelor of Science in Community Psychology from Nova University, she continued at Nova and earned a Masters of Science in Counseling Psychology and Guidance. In addition, she has received her certification in Substance Abuse Studies. Melinda developed the University's general policy on substance abuse and also coordinated the University's Drug policy for Student Athletes. This included working with the coaching staff to ensure attendance at educational seminars, distribution of literature, individual counseling, and community referrals as needed. She carried out extensive community research and was instrumental in the implementation of Lynn University's Employee Assistance Program.
Melinda is a Licensed Psychotherapist and is a nationally certified Professional Psychologist. She is currently Director of Associates in Psychological Care, a private psychological practice in Boca Raton. She is an active member in the American Psychological Association; the Associations of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counseling on both the Florida State and National level; American Association of College Student Personnel; and the local Palm Beach County Mental Health Association. As a representative of Lynn University, she was a committee member on the Mayor's Task Force against Drugs for the City of Boca Raton, Florida. She was also the University's delegate to the Palm Beach County Drug Consortia, an assembly of local college and university student service personnel working under a grant from the Federal Government to decrease drugs on campus. Melinda has been interviewed on local radio; the topic of discussion included reasons individuals seek counseling.
Melinda frequently served as an instructor in both the undergraduate, day division classes, as well as in Continuing Education classes. She has developed, implemented, and taught most of the catalog course offerings in the Behavioral Science Division at Lynn University. She has continued to work on keeping student offerings updated and relevant to today's innovations and trends in the field of psychology. She also served as practicum coordinator for Behavioral Science majors involved in community service projects and internship assignments, as well as practicum supervisor for Nova's graduate students in Mental Health & Psychology. She completed her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Union Institute Graduate School, specializing in the areas of Psychopharmacology and Higher Education. Clinical Internships were completed within the School of Education -The Advancement Program (TAP) and Boca Raton Community Hospital- Pharmacy Department.
